THE ICON - Introduction

“What is an Airstream?”

Why, it’s the suburban American dream packaged into a shiny, mobile Twinkie, of course.

Well sure it is. Is that all?

No way. Not even close.

This question is big. It is a question that radiates from the Airstream’s shiny surface to touch seemingly limitless facets of architectural theory and American culture. I have greatly enjoyed sharing the question with people. The resulting conversations have been fascinating, yet instead of pinpointing answers, they keep opening new doors and the question keeps getting larger. The idea of creating a methodical, all-inclusive summary of the Airstream seems unrealistic and unnecessary. Instead, I have chosen to address this wonderfully complex object by focusing on specific qualities and topics that generate thought-provoking tangents. Hopefully, the collection of these inquires will fuel new questions and paint a fine picture of the Airstream onto the digital blogosphere.

So,“What IS an Airstream?”

Think about it....
